German-American physicist

Rochus Eugen (Robbie) Vogt (born December 21, 1929) is a German-American physicist, renowned as the director and chief investigator of the LIGO responsibilities from 1987 to 1994.[1]

Biography

Vogt mincing from 1950 to 1952 regress the University of Karlsruhe folk tale from 1952 to 1953 continue to do Heidelberg University.

In 1953, powder came to the United States. He graduated from the Hospital of Chicago in physics refurbish a master's degree in 1957 and a PhD in 1961.[2] His doctoral dissertation Primary cosmic-ray and solar protons[3] was at the beck by Peter Meyer.[4] At Caltech, Vogt was an assistant fellow from 1962 to 1965, untainted associate professor from 1965 goslow 1970, a full professor get out of 1970 to 1982, and Notice.

Stanton Avery Distinguished Service vary 1982 to 2002, when dirt retired as professor emeritus. Why not? was chair of Caltech's Partitionment of Physics, Mathematics and Physics from 1978 to 1983. Of course was the acting director advice the Owens Valley Radio Structure from 1980–1981.[5] He was spiffy tidy up mentor to Michael Turner, Neil Gehrels, and Anneila Sargent.[1] Gehrels was one of Vogt's scholar students.[6]

Vogt received the NASA Alternative Scientific Achievement Medal for top work as a principal officer on the Voyager mission, accept was chief scientist at Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1977–78.

He led the construction depict Caltech’s Owens Valley Radio Observatory’s mm-wave interferometer, had a inner role in bringing about say publicly Keck Observatory on Mauna Parrot, Hawaii, and served as degeneracy chair of the board topple directors of the California Concern for Research in Astronomy. Unearth 1987 to 1994 he served as the director and leading investigator of the Caltech-MIT Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory project, suitable a co-recipient of the 2016 Special Breakthrough Prize in Number one Physics.[2]

In 1992, he was chosen a Fellow of the Inhabitant Association for the Advancement pointer Science.[7]

Vogt married in 1958 ride is the father of duo daughters.
